Visage
what mortar ties your bones?
- Breed:arabian x westphalian
- Build:Vitri boasts no great size; his Arabian heritage severely limits his bulk, and his head is delicately concave. His neck is gracefully arched, extending smoothly into his sloped shoulders and long, tapering legs. The Westphalian blood contributes some additional muscle to Vitri's slender figure, but most would not consider him to be threatening, at least in a physical sense.
- Pelt:Dyed in a rich shade of teal, Vitri's short fur lies flat against his skin and leaves him constantly shivering during the winter months.
- Mane:Rather than a traditional mane, Vitri sports a fin upon the crest of his neck. Starting from between his ears, five blue-gray spines point back towards his withers, while two matching spines angle forward from his poll. The webbing between the seven spines is a gentle shade of green.
- Tail:Vitri's tail is built like a lion's, but what sets it apart is that, rather than a tuft of hair, a glowing orb adorns the end of it. His tail is nearly always held looped up so that pale yellow light is cast along his narrow back.
- Eyes:Vitri's guarded eyes are a frozen blue, though they are dulled by an air of superiority and apathy.
- Height:16.1 hh
- Hooves:Complementing his eyes, the dainty hooves that support Vitri's meager form are a pale sky blue.
- Marks:Clusters of pale, circular dapples, each ringed with dark blue, swirl across Vitri's sides, face, and legs, strongly resembling bubbles rising through water.
- Items:Extraction x2, Protrusion x2, Aura x1
Essentia
what boils such beating blood?
- Key Traits:
- Pessimistic:Vitri has learned that, the lower his expectations, the less disappointed he'll be with end results. As a result, his mind becomes trapped in a very negative mode of thinking, automatically assuming the worst about situations. He has little hope for his future to bring happiness and instead clings desperately to bittersweet memories of his past.
- Dishonest:Rarely does Vitri experience malicious intent, but telling lies serves as a sort of catharsis for the weary cynic. It brings him a strange sort of peace, knowing that he can shape another's reality, manipulate what they believe, conceal the truth, create his own. His fibs are impulsive, not meant to harm others, but rather to soothe his own turbulent mind.
- Judgmental:Preserved in the memory of his half-siblings is Vitri's idea of what an ideal companion should be, and any deviation from this image gives Vitri ample cause for complaint. He has no tolerance for corruption or arrogance, and even those lacking such hateful traits can rarely hold Vitri's attention for more than an hour.
- Spiteful:Vitri is not the type to "forgive and forget." He is capable of harboring a grudge for years, and if he feels justified, encounters no remorse in righting the wrong that has been done. It is when Vitri feels vengeful that he becomes the very thing he loathes: a violent, hateful hypocrite.
- Contradictory:In fact, Vitri is a hypocrite far more often than he realizes. He can't bear deception, impatience, or anger, but he is constantly guilty of all of these things. Additionally his desire to be left alone conflicts with his need for attention and affection. Faced with the imminent prospect of aging, he clings all the more tightly to his youth. Dealing with such an immense jumble of contradictions brings Vitri a heavy burden of stress and confusion.
- Likes:
- Attention:Vitri is quite used to being ignored, and most days, he truly doesn't mind it. However, when he does bother to address other horses, he often feels shut out, as if they have no time for whatever it is he's trying to say. He thirsts for the sort of attention his siblings offered him, the kind that makes him feel valuable.
- Youth:The turbulent world of adults is entirely repulsive to Vitri. He shies away from the responsibility that comes with growing older, but more than that, he can't bear the deceit and manipulation so often used by his elders for their own self-gain. He does find solace in the innocence of youth, a trait he treasured in his younger siblings.
- Stability:Having grown up in such an unpredictable environment, Vitri has long been dreaming of living in a state of complete stability. However, in a world as ever-changing as Alcryst, such stability is impossible, a fact that Vitri has yet to face. Establishing a normal routine keeps Vitri calm and happy. Well, relatively speaking.
- Dislikes:
- Phonies:Vitri can't stand the thought of others pretending to be something they're not. In his eyes, least he's not putting on a false front when he comes off as rude, dismissive, and isolated. Much of Vitri's disenchantment with the adult world stems from the glittering façades adorned by so many of its denizens.
- Water:Contrary to what his appearance suggests, Vitri prefers to stay far away from water. He finds the sensation of pressure coming at him from all angles thoroughly unsettling. Even heavy rain is enough to put him in a worse-than-usual mood, and many consider his disgruntled expression particularly amusing when he's constantly trying to blink raindrops out of his glaring eyes.
- Surprises:Any unexpected event is sure to send Vitri spiraling into a state of muted panic. He does not cope well in unpredictable situations and prefers to carefully plan out every day. Of course, this need to know as much as possible about the future, before it happens, only leads to frustration and a foul attitude for Vitri.
- Strengths:
- Independent:Being a loner has never bothered Vitri, which is quite fortunate, since it is so difficult for him to tolerate nearly every other living being. He can survive perfectly well on his own and knows how to take care of himself. He might be just as good at taking care of others, if only he would open himself up.
- Strong-Willed:Though it may get him into trouble, Vitri will remain stubbornly resolute once he's set his mind on something. His own opinions come first, and they are not easily swayed by the words of others. There is little room for doubt in his mind, as he forcibly shoves it aside.
- Weaknesses:
- Impatient:When Vitri decides he wants something, suddenly that want becomes all-consuming. He needs it then and now, or his entire world comes screeching to a halt. "Just a minute" stretches on endlessly for the stallion, every second seeming to last years. He's really just being overly dramatic, but voicing his impatience is a relatively healthy way to release his more generalized frustration.
- Antisocial:Vitri finds it difficult to maintain casual conversations with others. Even if he does make it so far as to introduce himself, he generally loses interest before any meetings make much progress. Life might be much more fulfilling with a handful of companions, but Vitri is unwilling to admit this to himself.
- Fears:
- Loss:Vitri has formed only two meaningful relationships in his life. One ended with death, the other with angry words and rejection. Both are now nothing but painful memories that Vitri cannot escape. The idea of attempting to open himself up to any sort of relationship fills Vitri with paralyzing fear, as the only end he can foresee will be nothing but disastrous. He is nearly as afraid of hurting a companion as he is of losing one.
- Secrets:
- Guilty:Vitri has had far too much time to think since setting off to be alone again, and he's come to blame himself for his half-brother's death. If only he'd kept H'avi more sheltered during his first winter. If only he'd refused to let H'avi go out hunting during that storm. If only, if only, if only. There are thousands of things that Vitri believes could have saved his half-brother, and he refuses to allow himself to ignore the guilt, considering it to be a suitable punishment for his greatest failure.
- Dreams:
- Reconciliation:Mingling with Vitri's guilt for H'avi's death is his guilt for acting so harshly towards Petra. He fully expects her to hate him now, but he does dream of one day finding her again and mending their relationship. Still, he reasons that she will be safer and happier without his presence in her life. He's not cut out for the emotional toll of having friends, and returning to his half-sister would only mean dragging her down with him.
Saga
what shatters beneath those hooves?
- Sire:Dramh Q'lin
- Dam:Jyrra Salisse
- Sibling(s):Petra (half-sister), Havi (half-brother, deceased)
- Historical Events:
The only constant in the herd into which Vitri was born was its instability. Their leadership, laws, and location were in a nearly continuous state of change, and the young colt's first impression of the adult world was hardly a good one. His father was one of several stallions vying for the chance to take charge of the herd, while Vitri's mother was a simple creature whose lack of ambition left her entirely unmotivated to do anything other than pursue the affections of whichever stallion happened to cast his eyes in her direction. Although his birth was a novel occasion for both parents, he barely held their attention for six months before they were swept up by their own self-involvement once more, rendering their son effectively invisible. He received little more than a nod of acknowledgement from them on the best of days. Not that Vitri was bothered by this — he was easing into his new role as an isolated cynic quite nicely.
Vitri had been occupying the fringes of the herd for three years when an unusually drastic shift took place. A stallion named Byron arrived from another land, challenged the leader, and won with ease. The new leader's impressive bulk was enough to intimidate any other brute with a challenge on his lips, and it was Byron's first order of business to banish any stallion he deemed a potential threat, including Vitri's father. Vitri himself was spared, thanks to nothing more than his age. However, with time, a bond formed between Byron and the blue stallion. This was the first adult horse with whom Vitri could speak openly, though as his elder's true personality grew more apparent, Vitri found himself growing increasingly disillusioned. Retreating once more into himself, Vitri resumed his self-inflicted isolation.
It wasn't until the end of his fourth year that began to interact willingly with others again. Jyrra's new foal, Petra, attempted to reach out to her half-brother. Though he cast her aside with stinging words on several occasions, she always returned, her kind eyes shining with something the bitter stallion couldn't quite understand. It wasn't until she named it that he recognized it as love. He noticed an innocence in her that had been missing from all others he had met, and he latched on to this, desperate to return to a state of youthfulness he had never possessed.
Two years later, Vitri's attachment to Petra was stronger than ever, and one was rarely seen without the other. She kept him grounded, held the chaotic world at bay. When Petra's brother Havi, was born, it was Vitri who first reached out to the colt, making it the first friendship he had ever initiated. Two became three, and the siblings thrived in each other's company. Their fragile lives continued peacefully, until the day Havi's was taken, leaving the other two shattered. They had watched, eyes stained with desperate sadness, while their brother's spirit withered. When his heaving lungs and stuttering heart finally did allow him rest, it was a moment of relief as much as anything.
Wracked by savage grief, Vitri could not bear the thought of remaining with the herd. Painful memories haunted him with each step he took, and not even Petra's pleading eyes and tortured voice could convince him to stay. Upon realizing the inevitable loss of her elder brother, Petra stubbornly followed her Vitri as he attempted to leave. It took him nearly a mile to work up the nerve to face her, at which point his words attacked her with such ferocity that he could see her tender love for him crumbling to ash. In the months since then, Vitri has attempted to maintain his solitude, as he is afraid of allowing himself to destroy another friendship.
