Something had changed.
It was not just the way he kept up his head or moved his body, but something deep inside had forced a new perspective onto his once hateful eyes. He saw beyond blood and revenge, beyond taking a man's last breath or fill it with terror. Maybe it was because he did not fear if people saw him anymore.
Cesare stood on the road with his back against Morrene, breathing silently as Floyd's claws dug into his right shoulder. The bird was big - some would say huge - and it had an appetite for flesh that would make any butcher flinch. But Floyd was Cesare's bird, his companion and together they looked like someone you would not mess with. They both knew it and loved it.
But as all creatures need a taste of freedom once in a while, Cesare extended his arm and Floyd moved towards his hand. With a great force, the human launched the bird into the air and watched it ascend against the pale sky. In it's wake, a whirlwind whipped sand and leaves, as if the world was dancing. Soon it was gone, but Cesare did not move until a smile crossed his scarred face.
