Welcome to
SILMARIL Studios

What I do »Silmaril Studios specializes in digitally-made artwork. To see samples of my work, check out my deviantArt account here. Areas of my personal expertise include:
Photo Manipulation - Copies and pastes different images into one collaborative image; uses effects and colors to seamlessly integrate different realities into one; infinite and unimaginable possibilities while seeming believable to the eye [example]
Lineart - A black-and-white sketch of a given subject; gives a general idea of appearance without too much detail; optimal for later coloring, if desired [example]
Coloring - Takes lineart to the next level with various colors and medial lighting effects; perfect for character references and a personal and affordable gift idea [example]
Digital Painting - Similar to traditional paintings in that brushes and colors are used to create a 'realistic' or believable image; less common and more personal way of portraying a given subject, as it is a more difficult and lengthy process to completion [example]
My art is something I've taken very personally from the very beginning. I've never wanted to sell out or simply partake in it for the money (and let's be honest, if I was in it for the money, I sure as heck wouldn't be an artist). I make art because I like it. It makes me feel good, I have a certain amount of skill with it, and I think it's a good thing to do. I want to make a business out of this only to share my work with others while not wasting away doing so. You help me, and I'll help you - that's what it's all about.
Currently, I am accepting payment in both USD and Alcryst's gold coin currency, though USD is always preferred. USD prices range from $5 to $20. Gold coin prices are always subject to change. Contact me for a price quote.
Why I do it »I have a wide range of interests. Having no classical training in any one medium means that my experimentation has carried me from using pencils, fine point pens and paintbrushes to the mouse, Photoshop and drawing tablets the art industry of this day and age knows well. I've even dabbled in code for the past several years of my life. No matter what you need, I can find the exact medium that will fit your needs. As a result of this variety and flexibility, I provide a very original perspective in the artistic world that I find very fulfilling. I love making others happy with my art; I can only hope that that sentiment rings true for everyone who views it.
Who I am »I'm a 21 year old girl with a heart for a wide variety of things - among which art is included, of course. Music, video games, horses, traveling, writing, I love it all. I took three years of graphic design in high school (though a good majority of it was very boring and had mostly to do with basic design concepts - the real learning was the experimentation I did on my own) and nothing else. I've always wanted to take an art class, but never got the chance to. As a result, almost everything I have ever made or will make is the product of my own curiosity. I study others' work, try things out, make mistakes, and meddle about until I have managed to learn something new. As a result, my art grows steadily better over time. If my portfolio is not the most professional you've ever seen, I understand and am sorry - but know that it will only improve as the months and years pass. Your understanding is most appreciated. Again, I do this as a hobby really, with a little bit of money on the side (no, as one can imagine, this is not my primary way of making money), and I have had very little real training, so my own unique ways are all I have.
How it works »You create a thread in this board and tell me what you would like, using the form below, in your commission. Browsing through my dA gallery and past orders, you can get a gist of the things I'm better at and/or do more often. Simply tell me what you're looking for and I will either give you options and a price quote or I will refer you to someone who can carry out your idea to full, beauteous fruition. I will be as honest and friendly as I can in my communications and I hope that, no matter what, you find exactly what you're looking for. If indeed I can take on your project, I will give you a price for my services. You can haggle with me, but I reserve every right to decline an offer if it is too low. Keep in mind that I spend an average of 5 to 7 hours on even the simplest pieces; imagine if I demanded even the measly minimum wage for my services...it could still add up to $30 for the most basic artwork! So please don't complain about my prices. I spend a great deal of time and effort on each individual piece, and I like to do everything to the best of my ability, no matter how much I'm making for it. You get what you pay for, so know that at least you're getting my 102% efforts towards full quality with each commission.
Another thing that I must emphasize is that I require full payment for my services before I begin your commission. This is to ensure that I don't have to hassle and nag you for my payment after I've already completed your commission. Too many times I have made a fraudulent bargain with someone who never ended up paying what they owed me for my art. This is the same thing as any tangible thing you could buy; if you take it without paying what you owe, it IS THEFT and I will NOT be sympathetic. Payment is made through Paypal - it's free and easy to transfer money, so long as you have a bank account. If you cannot do it this way, simply talk to me and we will work something out - as long as you notify me in advance. I reiterate; I will not start any commission until I have been paid.
Please fill out this form when getting your price quote from me. Nothing more is required than what you know for sure; but the more fields you fill out, the more it helps me envision what I can do for you. So let me help you! Do what you can and I'll do the rest :)Medium: (My skills are pretty versatile. I can do digital, with photo manipulation or digital paintings, or physical mediums, such as drawing/sketching and painting. Tell me what format you'd like your art to be done in.)
Subject: (Who's the star of this piece? If you wish to portray a character as the subject, give their name and physical description. Otherwise, just give me a summary of the focus and purpose of the artwork.)
Setting: (The backdrop for your subject. Where will they be located? Be as precise as possible, but if you don't know for sure, you can simply give the mood for the composition in the field below. Maybe you want the setting to be somewhere eerie but you can't think of anything particularly eerie at the moment.)
Mood: (The mood of the composition will have an effect on many factors, such as lighting, color, contrast - or lack thereof. If this is a gift for someone for the holidays, perhaps it's cheery and bright. If the piece is going to exemplify the darker natures of one of your characters, the opposite might be true. Use whatever words come to mind when thinking of the desired mood for the piece - it doesn't need to just be feelings. If you find this difficult, you can also describe what you want the surroundings to be like, or what sort of feelings you want them to evoke in the viewer.)
Stock: (If you have images that inspire your thoughts on how you want the piece to turn out, or stock I can reference when putting your image together, feel free to include it! Finding stock literally takes as much time as actually creating the image sometimes, so helping me lessen the amount of stock I need to find will help you see the finished product even sooner.)
Notes: (Anything else you would like me to know up front can go right here.)
I should reply within a matter of days; if I do not, it is not because I am ignoring you. I get on my computer (almost) every day, but life happens, and should I be kept away it does not entitle you to send me tons of messages asking where I've gone to. Don't fret, I will not forget about you, whether or not you're wanting to commission me or are simply wanting to know a previously made commission's progress.
A final note »Thanks for stopping by. Even if you're not commissioning, just reading through shows a level of interest I can't be ignorant of. I deeply appreciate anyone who stops to look at my work, regardless of what comes of it. Have a spectacular day!
