The tread of Amalia's worn boots against the cobblestoned path made no noise, but the sound of the stone she had kicked ahead of her rattled out her presence. Blue streaks of daylight painted the sky above, but the walls encasing Lia were smeared with shadows. Faint hints of claustrophobia pulled at the girl, dragging her forward in a subtly rushed stride. Although she often traveled these narrow roads, the weight of buildings pressing in from all directions continued to frighten her. Muttered words buzzed at her lips, her list of things to remember keeping her mind occupied. Her stable had only just opened, but there was much planning yet to be done. Reliable sources of bedding and meat had to be established. A trustworthy stablehand needed to be hired. And of course, there was still the issue of finding a customer.
Amalia lurched to a halt as the path ahead forked. She'd hardly been paying attention to where she'd been going for the past several minutes, and anxiety crashed over her as she realized she no longer recognized the ivy-strewn walls surrounding her. Instinctively, she traced her fingers across the bird tattoo on her left wrist, a nervous habit she'd acquired rather recently. It was rare that Lia felt truly unsafe in the city, but with the shade hanging heavy all around, she recalled the tales told around the fire in the Saloon, and fear prickled in her palms. Faewin was ripe with thieves and vagabonds, and here she was, a small and unarmed girl, lost in the labyrinthine alleyways.
