Feel free to skip to the second post for a more concise guide, though it has far less detail.

New Member Walkthrough

Quite simply, this is a step-by-step Guide adjusting users to the sheer magnitude of Alcryst, both in content and size. It is split into Mandatory and Optional sections and will walk you through every thread in comprehensive order. Read each bullet point separately and take your time, you can take several days to complete these Instructions if you want. If you have a question at any point during this thread, jot it down for yourself. If, by the end of reading the Instructions, you still have that question, then please post in Inquisitions so we can happily help you out. If you ask before you've finished reading, chances are there's a section ahead of you that will answer your question, so try to hold off until you're done.

There is, admittedly, a lot to read. However, it is all relevant and necessary. Scanning may cause you to miss vital information, skipping guarantees you will, and thorough reading will help you enjoy the site fully. If you aren't willing to read what the site entails and allows, is there really any point being on it? You can always rant in our cbox, we've all tread the same path and can empathize!

Mandatory

Start with the Mandatory section called Everyone. Once you have finished that tab, continue on to read either Horses, Humans, or both as explained at the bottom of the Everyone tab. Finally, finish up with the Reconvening tab, applicable to both species. You are required to read the linked threads in Mandatory completely and their content will unlock the password to the character creation boards. It is highly suggested you move onto the Optional sections afterward.

Let's start off with the Alcrystan World. This presents the mechanics of society, the landscape, the history, and Alcryst itself. Why start reading about what you can and cannot do before you even know whether you're interested?
Alright, if you're onto the next bullet point I think it's safe to assume you are at least slightly intrigued. So now let's jump into the details with the Central Laws. These are not the most important rules on the site so much as the most general and broad rules that have no other board or place to go; you may be a bit confused reading these without any other context but, as you continue through these Instructions, the pieces will come together. Try not to let yourself get overwhelmed! And remember we are here for you!
Guessing you're happy that's over, eh? Trust me, we all feel you! But be proud of yourself and brush off the dust because you're starting to learn the ropes. I'm sure more questions are popping up than answers being given but things will get clearer as you both read on and continue to experience the site.
After reading those two threads, you most likely know whether or not you are going to join. If you still are unsure, don't worry about it! As Dory from Finding Nemo would say, just keep swimming. Either way, I am now going to help you out with navigating this huge site. Let me briefly describe: There are 12 Categories, each looking like large pictures on our homepage. Click on the Category to expand it, revealing all the Boards within it. Each Board has a description that will clarify what it pertains to but, even simpler than that, the top line is an underlined synopsis of what to find inside. If you need to find somewhere specific, there are 3 ways to easily navigate there:
- First, at the top of the site, below the logo, you will find what is called the Navigation Menu containing button links. Hovering over certain ones, such as Official, will give you a drop-down list of further locations, like Rules. Hovering over some of those will extend a sub-list of more options, such as Main Rules. In the Navigation Menu you will find every mandatory, important thread and area that is considered useful.
- Another way to navigate with ease is to reference our Site Navigation thread. It lists every OOC board and briefly explains them in more common vernacular.
- And lastly, if you look above the threads/boards and below the logo, you should see a bar that on the righthand side says Participated and on the lefthand side says A L C R Y S T. This is your Navigation Tree. It shows you the Site Name > Category > Board > Sub-Board > Thread Name that you are in. If you hover over the name Alcryst, a drop-down with all the Categories will appear. Hover over a Category to choose a Board and, from there, you can hover over a Board to choose a Sub-Board. Clicking on any of these will take you there. This is also a great tool for fast back-tracking!
Right now it's daunting but, with a bit of practice, it will become far easier to remember where everything is and go right to it, I promise! You can always ask in the cbox how to find something if you are ever feeling lost.
Hopefully you feel more confident about finding your way around with these handy tips. Let's continue on now! One of the most informative threads on Alcryst is our next stop: the FAQ. The FAQ has information you won't find anywhere else on the site; it is a mandatory thread that gives information just like any rule thread or guide. Feel free to suggest other questions that should be answered in our FAQ! Since this is your first visit, you need to read the entire FAQ but later on you can use it more as a quick reference, helpfully divvied up into topics so you can find what you need and get out fast. If you are still stuck, a quick CTRL + F on your keyboard to search for keywords does the trick!
You've seen a lot of references to Stats throughout these threads, so what are they? Time to read our Guide on Character Stats that explains not only what they are but how to gain them, why you want them, and how they will affect your experience. Much of the site revolves around these so listen attentively! Or... well, read attentively.
I'm sure you noticed that Alcryst isn't exactly the epitome of morality, so this next Guide may come as no surprise: Stealing and Battling. Some tabs pertain to only Humans or only Horses but the overall Guide is crucial to both. Thievery is rampant in these streets!
Whether you are the Horse or the Human, you'll need to know the mechanics of Domestication. Even if you are a Horse planning on never being captured or a Human who never wants to own a Horse, the union of the two species is so central to the site that you still need to understand the fabric of it, even if you don't delve into it personally.
And here we come to the fork in our road. You now have a decision to make. Alcryst is designed so you can play only Humans, only Horses, or both with equal ease. This allows you to play your preference and entirely avoid the other sections if you want to. So, take your pick. If you are going to be involved in both, even if you plan on leaning more toward one, read both Horse and Human--my apologies for a few redundancies. If you are playing only a Human or only a Horse with no intent to ever venture to the other species, read only its respective tab. If you might dabble in the other side someday, I highly suggest reading its corresponding tab just because you might as well get that under your belt now, right? Or even if you want to stay with one species, maybe you want to read the other's info so you understand Alcryst as a whole and know what your fellow roleplayers are experiencing. After that, we will reconvene for more information relevant to both species!

The Equine Hierarchy is pivotal to equine life. Those who belong to a herd have perks, security, and social standing. While it does not directly affect Tamed horses, it still marks residual reputation and respect in their encounters. It is not necessary to be in a herd and you don't need to find it appealing, there is nothing wrong with being a Rogue, but regardless you must be aware of the different ranks because it is an important structure to the wild society.
You might be wondering: how do horses earn money? Through something you'll find only on Alcryst called Spirits and Lures! Not only does it grant you a method of collecting currency, it is fun, promotes activity, and ties the OOC and IC world together with a distinct Alcrystan flavor. One might just say it's the circle of life.

Two of Alcryst's central themes are Establishments and Freelancing. These are called Occupations, a word you'll see often, and what defines your social standing. An Establishment Occupation means it originates from a board--such as a Shop--whereas a Freelance Occupation is something you run on your own without a board, an individual service. Before we get into Establishments, we'll cover the abundant Freelance Occupations. Even if you do not plan on ever getting a job, at some point you will require the services of an employed character and, as a customer, you need to understand these systems. Read on, brave writer!
Back to the brick and mortar--or the glowing cloud fluff, no telling what your building is made out of on Alcryst! Our Stables and Inns Guide is next. These are just two of the Establishments you can own. Stables and Inns are necessary for the site to function because they provide characters with a residence and, without a Stable, there would be no Tamed Horses at all!
The other side of Establishments are Shops. These are found in Emporium and all work differently but serve the same purpose: a way for members to sell some type of good in some manner and earn compensation for it.

There is the Hacienda, a farm land where you can grow crops and treats and raise cattle to feed Tamed Horses. While running a Farm is the most demanding and time-consuming Occupation, it is extremely rewarding once you get going and is the most profitable branch of Alcryst.
An Establishment requiring less effort is the Galleria where you buy tack, grooming supplies, and stall bedding for a cheap price and re-sell it for a higher price to earn money, no skill or much energy needed.
The final Establishment is a Smithy in the Forge where you sell weapon and armor designs; keep in mind this requires no actual artistic talent, you need only successfully convey how the weapon/armor looks visually, a mere sketch suffices. Reading this thread is particularly mandatory because it details Armor and Weapons, two defensive and offensive tools you will encounter frequently IC and need to know about.

As you can imagine, unlike Freelance Occupations, the Establishments require an actual location to work from. While Emporium boards can have any appearance for free, Stands and Inns are created within a city and have to be physically built. So how do those get constructed? Through the Caravan! This is a site-run operation that helps you create every wall, from basic to extravagant, shack to castle! Through this same board you can also make your character's own house, the highest tier of living. Many characters are Homeless, a good sum live in an Inn, and the rich lounge in their very own Residence.
So you know what the Establishments are and how to build it IC but what about the OOC requirements? How do you get your actual board? Like most things, you purchase it. There are a few default Plots of Land in Faewin and Morrene for Inns and Stables that you can purchase by following their premade, stickied thread within. However, once those are all bought, the only way to get a board is through the Underground and its Catalog. For a Shop, you purchase your board by posting in Invocation, which is discussed in their rules threads. We'll talk more about the Underground and Invocation in Reconvening so don't worry too much about it now.
All of these Shops are great but what about an ordinary person just wanting to get rid of their old items? For the odds and ends cluttering up your inventory, head into Morrene for the Black Market where anything goes and underhanded exchanges are cloaked in whispers. This isn't restricted to IC merchandise, either. Art, real life money, favors, ranks, secrets, it's pretty much all allowed. Why else would it be called a Black Market?
Similar to Establishments but remaining separate are our Guilds. These resemble IC clubs or associations. The Guildmaster, or founder, gets to invent the entire structure: ranks, treasury, rules, name, purpose, membership process, any and all aspects of their Guild. Most Guilds are equipped with a theme that they work to gain a reputation for. Are you a charity? A makeshift orphanage? Horse wranglers? A book club? Pranksters? Your options are endless!
Obviously these numerous Occupations are the best way to make money but they are not the only route. You can sell any Tamed Horse you own in the Vendue for money, items, or whatever else fits your fancy. Whether it be an individual sale via direct buy or an auction setting, you can make quite the living capturing horses, training them, and selling them off here.
Fighting is guided by Weapons, Armor, and Stats, but it is also affected by the Lethal Graces, Alcryst's version of martial arts and the key to superior hand-to-hand combat. Should you encounter a character trained by the Fyrym Temple, it may determine the outcome of any confrontations, so understanding this advantage is important to all two-leggers!
If you are in Faewin, you need to be aware that there are strict laws governing those cold marble walls. To avoid prison or, worse, execution, you must read Faewin's Lawbook. Since this stoic city is the tyrant of Alcryst, its boards plentiful and sprawling across the countryside, you will no doubt end up entering its gate and acknowledging the appropriate conduct might just save your hide. There is a very interesting twist, though: Unlike most sites, you will only get in trouble with Faewin law if a character sees you commit the crime and decides to report you. Let the bribing and sneaking commence! And even if you are turned in, there is no automatic penalty. Instead, the city will issue a warrant for your arrest and hire a Mercenary to hunt you down. So if you are a conniving bugger with skill at evasion and persuasion, you can get away with plenty. If you don't see the potential plot material here, click your heels together three times and give it another read!

To those of you who split off, welcome back to our reconvening! To those of you who read through both the Horses and Humans tabs, you are troopers and should be proud of yourselves, my goodness! You've stuck with me for a few thousand words already and no matter how long it took you to get here, it's an accomplishment. We have just a couple more things to cover as a Guest or New Member so on and on we go, where we stop ~~nobody kno~~... well, we stop at the end of the thread...
We have referenced the Underground already and I'm sure you've looked at it but I still want to cover what you can find there. This site-run store is where you get any item that doesn't fit into any other Shop and is the only store accessible to OOC Accounts in addition to IC Accounts. Here, you simply fill out the form and buy directly from the site for a price appropriate to the rarity and desirability of the item. Appearance modifications, powers, account decoration, plots of land--you name it, it's here. This is also where some cheap USD items are available! The best part is, if there is anything you feel should be added, posting your suggestion in Inquisitions will likely grant its incorporation on the site! So if you want an appearance that doesn't currently have an item possible to create it, just post and we'll make sure you get your perfect character.
Alcryst can be shaped by its members, new and old, especially through our system Contribution. Contribution lets you create your very own Plants, Creatures, Horse Breeds, Human Races, Riding Cues, and Languages. You decide everything about them; you can go as detailed as you want! You are also able to set restrictions and rules on them, such as who can use your Contribution and in what manner, etc. Creatures can be played as Companions, purchasable in the Underground, and Horse Breeds and Human Races can be played as actual Characters! Your Plants and Creatures can show up in roleplay threads (assuming you allow it) and might even earn you rewards by staff! Riding Cues can be incorporated in the structure of horse training, and, of course, Languages can have rich histories, grammars, anything you desire, and be spoken anywhere on the site! Through Contribution, anyone can start a trend that takes the entire site by storm, and many can make a profit off of it if they play their cards right.
If you do decide to join, your first account must be Sorted as an OOC Account in Almanac's Account Registry. After you are Sorted, you can begin posting around, have access to customizing your profile, and have a place in our site. Someone who remains Unsorted for too many weeks may end up deleted for inactivity!
Once you are Sorted, you'll have the ability to edit your user profile in the "personal" tab and have it show up in your Profile and Mini-Profile. Note that you need to expand the "Click for Important Information" section when editing your profile to check for mandatory fields. You'll notice that you cannot edit your display name: to do that, read the next bullet point!
As a Member, you will constantly be using our Invocation board. Whenever you need staff to do anything for you on the entire site, you post in Invocation to let us know. This saves us from back-breaking stress and guarantees your thread isn't overlooked. Have you seen how big Alryst is?

You are highly encouraged to read the Optional section after Mandatory. The information here is still vital for a true understanding of the site but it is not obligatory. Again, those interested in only one species can read solely the parts dedicated to them or, if interested in both in any way, you can read all three tabs.

If you are looking to roleplay solely Horses or merely want to keep your character Wild, you can guarantee their freedom through Immunity. Though unnecessary to avoid domestication, it is the only insured method apart from never leaving the Wilderness categories.
Looking to start your own herd? Browse our Trials board to see if there are any open Domitan and Mattrice auditions! There is no cap on Domitan and Mattrice ranks, it depends only on the amount of Rogues. We want to ensure herd members are always the minority, thus guaranteeing rarity, and so we do not open up another set of auditions until there are enough Rogues on the site to allow it. Meaning: you will always have a chance to own a herd if you're patient!
To view the established herds, head into Syndicate where the records are. Here, the Domitans and Mattrices declare their rules, stats, treasury, and anything else they see fit.
Belonging to a herd is highly esteemed, but belonging to a Unified herd is the ultimate prestige for Wild Horses. A process that unites the members through both mind and body, the Verdant Veldt unlocks their true potential.
Magical ties run through more than herds; they can knot together two horses in a marriage of spirit called Soul Binding. Soul Binding in Aerial Peak is possible only once before death and transcends any mortal relationship.
Want to learn more about bedding, grooming supplies, and the tools your Owner will use to provide for you if Tamed? That's located in Emporium's Galleria Rules and Catalog. It may be the Owner's responsibility to maintain your care but you need to know what exactly is happening to you, especially because it might end up lowering your stats!
If you are a Tamed Horse, you might get sold and bounced around in the Vendue where individual sale or auction is possible. Remember that your stats, appearance, and personality are the main factors in price so if you choose to behave or not will impact your Owner's profit and your value.
Wild Horses can get Armor from the ancient volcano, Heliorne. Both defensive and wicked-looking, Armor remains with a Horse even if they are Tamed. Reading up on how its defense works, how to get it, what it looks like, and other information could benefit you in the future.
Equipped with Armor or not, any mortal can be wounded or become ill or diseased. These impairments can only be healed through Taurid Cauldron and must be heeded until complete. Even the most precautious Horse can experience an ailment through a random event, for Alcryst is infested with danger in every crevice.
There are other ways to become invulnerable to attack and illness! Why treat an injury when you can avoid ever having one? Why adorn Armor when your skin can be the Armor? Receive Invincibility through Vapid Fen! Mortals beware, the test undertaken for such power may be a bigger bite than some can chew.
Should you decide to reproduce, Tamed or Wild, you'll need the aid of Genesis, our conception board. Birthing can then be achieved for Wild Horses through here and through a Veterinarian if Tamed.
Unique appearances are a staple of Alcryst, and though the Underground allows roleplayers full customization, Wild Horses can also receive a randomized makeover through Lithic Shore. This IC Interactive board is excellent for those lacking money, creativity, or who simply want a surprise.
Both public and private races can be choreographed and held by Horses in the Delusive Expanse, allowing equid to test equid in the ultimate competition of speed, endurance, and agility.
While Cloning evokes images of identical beings, Alcryst takes it one step further: the Clone is the embodiment of the Wild Horse's soul, a one-dimensional replica of their most dominant trait. Some will find they don't quite like their true self once faced with it.

Now, the Freelance Guide we read in the previous Human tab only summarized each Freelance Occupation. If you want to know the mechanics and rules to a particular field, you can optionally read any of the following:
- Fisherman

- Journalist
- Lawyer
- Mercenary along with this thread
- Alchemist
Further information on Maids, Stablehands, and Veterinarians is located in the Stables and Inns Guide we are going to read below, since they have no board that is more relevant to them.
Blacksmiths can purchase materials to make the Armor and Weapons in either the Forge or the IC Interactive Board called Empyrean Mines in Faewin where you can mine your own materials.
If you're interested in taking on one of these Freelance Occupations, visit our Freelance Occupation register. Getting the job is easy, just a quick fee and a small form, but keeping your job(s) will require some effort.
There are multiple ways to advertise your business! You can rent space in our Classifieds, located at the bottom of our homepage, utilize our Adbox in our "Chat Box" sidetable under the "Adbox" tab, and/or take advantage of the blurbs in our Freelance Occupation register or board description for your Establishment.
Ownership papers for Tamed Horses, Plots of Lands, Emporium Shops, and legally-binding documents forged by Lawyers such as Marriage Certificates and Contracts are all posted by staff in Certification per character.
Though Faewin is renowned for its marble, it harbors an extravagent garden called Kaleidoasis where characters can forage for Treats and rare Ingredients!
Feel like missing sleep and sanity? Your Human characters can get together for a good ol' time with a noisy consequence in Genesis where conception is determined and Delphic Provenance, Faewin's hospital, where the real fun starts. A little ironically, you can get relief from pain, whether it be injury or disease, in the Provenance as well. Life on Alcryst is dangerous, even for the safest of folk, and a little time in the ward can Heal you right up--hopefully. How ominous.

STOPPED HERE
Maybe you want children but would prefer to adopt from Faewin's Sanguine Orphanage or want to play an Orphan as a character. Either way, the rundown Orphanage is where the parentless characters under age 36 (equivalent to 18 on Earth) reside.
Now put your best foot forward and let's waltz (pun intended) to the Caracole Foyer in Faewin. This is a luxurious ballroom where you can hold, you guessed it, grande balls! Or anything else you want. Really, it's a fancy place that characters can rent for whatever event they decide to host. Swinger party, anyone?
And what's the best way to spruce up any get-together? Alcohol! Or, rather, Elixirs as they are called on Alcryst. They are magic-spun potions that produce interesting effects similar to Earthen alcohol. Equally destructive, equally addictive, and equally fun! They are purchasable in two locations: the Ensorcelled Tavern in Morrene and Runic Saloon in Faewin. Both provide different Elixirs and have drastically contrasting atmospheres. Stable Owners holding Contests and Humans who host IC Contests in the Arena can buy mass amounts of Elixir to sell to their audience.
For even more plot potential, why not try for a blessing--or curse--in the Seraphic Cathedral? The Alcrystan Gods must like the echo in the cavernous church, or maybe the blood from all that sacrificing is their lure, because praying to them here might grant you a gift, smite you with a punishment, or simply smack you with resounding silence.
Should your character feel less inclined to partake in religion, or maybe they just want to get a nifty gifty, they can cast a coin into Morrene's Amaranthine Well and see what the hollow clanking returns with.
If you find value in knowledge rather than material possessions, you could risk a visit to the Arcane Oracle, where your character can learn flashes of their future. This is the only way you, the roleplayer, can in some indirect way talk directly to your character, whether to warn them, enlighten them, change their path, or simply mess with them like we all love to do.
Finding anything on Alcryst that is entirely untouched by magic is an unlikely feat; for example, say you wanted to send a message from one character to another. How do you go about this? Why, flying dragons of course! Morrene's Draconic Courier offers you a public or private way to send messages IC that will actually count in a roleplay... or why not buy your own Dragon to perch on your shoulder, do your bidding, and terrorize your enemies? If they don't set you on fire, that is.
When you go to make your character, you might want to double-check your desired name(s) and face claim, if applicable, are not already claimed in our current Taken Names list and Face Claim.
And last but not least for our Human Only section, there is one more way to make or break your wallet: the Suntorn Den in Morrene, a Gambling House where success plagues fantasies and loss erodes futures. It's also a great place to waste time and dissolve boredom!

If you haven't already, post in the cbox! We love new members ~~perhaps too much~~ and would love to meet you! Before you start chatting away be sure to read our Cbox Rules at least once, though, as we have several. Like most things around these parts, you click on them for it to expand, and they are located just below the cbox on the lefthand side of your screen.
You should probably know who the staff of Alcryst are as ~~they are your slaves~~ their help is needed for just about everything. To learn more about them (or should I say us?) take a look at Meet the Staff for some creeping. Interested in applying for the team? Check out our permanent Staff Employment Application! They work more like an real-life job application than an "audition" so you can put forth your consideration any time after you join and it will stay on record for whenever we need a new face in our ranks.
Staff aren't the only members that can help you out, though! The Member Advice thread is open for any member to post their advice in and I encourage you to take advantage of it--and share any knowledge you have! These could be topics like common roleplayer terms, tips on writing, tips on how to accustom yourself to Alcryst, clarification on something you find otherwise confusing, information about horses, or any other advice related to this site that might help someone.
It is imperative you remain updated on any thread posted in Proclamations because anything in there is mandatory for you to read and generally time-sensitive. For example, an Activity Check. Note that, new or not, you are responsible for posting in any Activity Checks and are not exempt from deletion if you fail to in time.
That being said, there is one way to be exempt from an Activity Check: if you go Away through the board Voids. When you are Away, you are immune to many things on Alcryst such as challenges, theft, deletion, etc. However, there are some stipulations about going Away. First off, if you are Away you have to be Away. Posting absent and then going around roleplaying is an unfair immunity and your Away post will be archived. Likewise, if you simply say you are leaving for a while and give us no idea when you will be back and then vanish for months, it's unfair that your account was preserved for that long because it's essentially eternal immunity. Therefore, you have to either declare a return date, upon which your Away post is archived and immunity terminated, or you can leave ambiguously but will only receive one month of immunity before your Away post is archived. You can always come back and post Away again should this happen or set an end date if you hadn't before. While this may seem insensitive and unforgiving, it is necessary to avoid empty accounts, unfounded advantages, and abandoned shops/herds/guilds/plots/etc.

When you're ready to make your first character, how about you check the plots in Agendas and wanted ads in Reconnaissance to see if you want to integrate a character into any of them? Or maybe you'd prefer to post your own wanted ad/plot before you undergo your character's creation!
To get into the joining boards Equid Inception and Hominal Inception, you need their separate passwords. How do you learn these? Answering questions about what you've learned in some of the mandatory threads! There is one question per designated thread with one blatant answer. The first letter to the answers, once strung together from top answer to bottom answer, complete the password! You may not receive any help with these questions, they need to come from you alone to prove you read and comprehended the mandatory threads. Giving out the answer to anyone is also prohibited! These passwords will be changed any time there is a major update in one of the mandatory rule threads to ensure everyone goes to read the new parts.
Once inside said joining boards, you'll want to read the rules in the Joining Form thread thoroughly, then copy/paste the form into your own thread. There is a mandatory Clarification for the Joining Form above the code that you need to read through for further rules and explanation. Remember, you can always create any Contribution Horse Breeds and/or Human Races that allow it!
Don't have any art of your character or desire/talent to make your own? Visit our Composition category for freebies or to make a request! We aren't a big fan of Face Claims and highly encourage members to instead exploit Composition for some customization. However, if you do like to make art, perhaps you'd enjoy having your own Gallery to sell commissions within!
After your character is accepted, you have a few responsibilities. Go to our Account Registry and Sort your account into the proper IC Member Group. Then, please review the Face Claim, Taken Names, your Stats, any necessary Ailments, and your character's Display Name to make sure your character has been added and updated accurately by a staff member. We are human, we do make mistakes! Lastly, go to Edit Profile and fill out all the mandatory fields.
Optionally, you can create a Tracker in Traces now that you have a character! Trackers are one per member and can include any information at all about your characters and/or yourself. It is discouraged to post in one another's Trackers unless they specifically say you can; if someone posts in your Tracker and you do not want it there, ask a staff member through Invocation to delete or archive the post.
And that's it! You're all ready to venture into the surrealism and roleplay! You should have a very good grasp on how the site works, what is required of you, what all you can do, how to navigate, and why Alcryst is different from the rest. If you don't, then I have failed to write this Guide adequately and would love some feedback on how I could make this better in Inquisitions! Hopefully this is the most reading you will ever have to do in your life and you will have the opportunity to swat me at some point in payback for forcing all these words down your throat. Alright. Let's start brainstorming how the hell I'm going to slim this the hell down. Let's start with figuring out which threads should be mandatory and which should be optional and then for which species as well.

Central Laws - mandatory for all

The Alcrystan World - mandatory for all

equine hierarchy - mandatory for equines

site navigation - optional for all; it's currently in mandatory for a very valid reason, though, because it helps you navigate the site if you want. it's like.. in mandatory but technically optional. ok maybe I'm brainstorming the wrong route, because I'm not positive this is going to be kept as "mandatory" and "optional" totally separate, anyway. I might make more of a master list of links with notations of species and optional/mandatory instead of how it currently is. The main issue with that route is it'll be very lengthy, but somehow it might also be less... overwhelming. especially with bullet points and brief sentence synopses instead of the current huge paragraph format. Ok so proceeding from here on the assumption that this is going to be formatted in said format.

meet the staff - pretty sure I'm removing this thread as it is, but if I do keep it (with a total revamp), then optional for all

credits - optional for all, not sure it needs to even be mentioned in the guide at all

the map - optional for all

domestication - unsure. if they are a human or horse who never ever plan on interacting with the other side, then they don't need to know domestication. however it has a lot of info in it that anyone who is even a little interested in mixing species needs to know. maybe some things are both optional and mandatory. optional for those who will never own, roleplay, or interact with any part of the tamed horse system, mandatory for those with an interest in: roleplaying a tamed horse, owning a tamed horse, partaking in the domestication industry including stable ownership, racing, whatever other things I can think of... yeah. probably the best way to do it. have to put it that way, too, to give examples so they fully understand if it applies to them or not instead of kinda going "ehh, that probably doesn't apply to me" and moving on when it did.

character stats - mandatory for all

stealing and battling - mandatory for all, in.. bits. battling needs to be known by all, for example, but humans don't need to read force claiming. can I make a conditional mandatory? Like Mandatory for humans: this tab, this tab, this tab. Mandatory for horses: this tab, this tab. mandatory for all: this tab, this tab. Optional for horses: this tab. Some sort of mix like that.

spirits and lures - mandatory for horses. should there be like a... "in depth read rules, scan types" sort of thing? maybe that should be a trend in this list? must be read thoroughly and comprehensively versus "Hey just sorta take a look at it"

freelance occupations - mandatory for humans. not everyone will want to have an occupation but they're so pivotl to the economy and you'll inevitably have to use one someday so yeah, you bitches gotta read

stables and inns - ahhhh..... I don't know. If freelance occupations are mandatory, shouldn't stables/inns? because they're all occupations? but then freelance occupations is easy synopses, not the actual rule threads, whereas stables/inns is the actual rules thread. things like the lawyer rules thread are optional, so shouldn't this? maybe one of those conditional duals. like mandatory for those interested in: roleplaying a tamed horse, owning a tamed horse, owning a stable, partaking in any part of the domestication market, optional for those who: will never own a horse, will never roleplay a tamed horse, will never own or participate in a stable, will never partake in the domestication market. something like that.

guilds - mandatory for humans. it's pretty brief to read through and it's really impactful to the human world so it should be mandatory even though not everyone will own or belong to a guild.

quests - mandatory for all. if lures are mandatory, these should be. they're mainstream, big, all-species, and a way to make money bigtime. although, to be fair.. they're pretty much an IC Int thread, which all the others aren't mandatory... crap. why is figuring this out so difficult. I don't know about this.

member advice thread - clearly optional to all, probably should be mentioned though cuz it might have relevant info (at some point lol)

account registry and taken names - mandatory for all

freelance occupations registration and records - uhhhhmmm... should be optional and somehow mentioned in the freelance occupations guide area. Maybe a large bullet for the guide and a sub-bullet for the register, marked optional. maybe that's how this whole thing should be sorta organized, with main topics and sub-topics if there are any, so it can have some flow and connection. marked as optional for humans

energy abilities registration and records - marked as optional for all underneath the domestication guide

studs and broodmares - marked as optional for all underneath the domestication guide

proclamations board - should be linked as optional for all, more like a "heads up" that it exists so they can check for announcements and warning about activity checks. see now it's not even like "hey read this" it's more like "hey a heads up this exists." I swear I run into more problems as I go through this.
LATER EDIT NOTE: this should be reduced to just a staff app bullet that's a sub-bullet to meet the staff thread

OK a second to get my shit together.
Bulleted list with brief sentence synopses.
Main bullet with sub-bullets as necessary.
A simple label of "Mandatory/Optional for All/Horses/Humans" followed by the more in depth description.
In relevant synopses, include which tabs need to be read in-depth and which can be scanned
Main bullets will be in order of when they should be read, not in order of how they are in the site, and sub-bullets will simply follow their relevant main bullets.
Maybe some pieces are read this, some are scan this, and some are acknowledge this. so something like proclamations board might be acknowledge this. Oh, yes, I like this. It could be phrased like
"Mandatory for all to read" "Optional for horses to scan" "Optional for all to acknowledge" "Mandatory for all to read tab -blank- and optional for all to read tab -blank" "Mandatory for all to read tab -blank- and mandatory for all to scan tab -blank-" or something like all of that.

trials board for dom/matt auditions - optional for equines to acknowledge

staff app - optional for all acknowledge - should this be a sub-bullet to the trials? or no because the trials also talks about the horse auditions not just generic "trials"?

inquisitions - optional for all acknowledge

grievances - optional for all acknowledge sub-bullet to inquisitions

invocation - mandatory to all acknowledge (make them read the header of it)

safeguard - mandatory to all to scan

emulation - mandatory for all to acknowledge; should I link the actual threads from emulation or just kinda nod to the board as a whole?

hominal inception - mandatory for all humans, should I link the joining form or no since they have to read the rules to even get in there?

equid inception - same as above, mandatory for all horses

This guide will walk you through our site step by step, from bewildered newbie to confident comrade. It does not cover every board or thread but rather addresses those with necessary or particularly useful counsel. There is core material required for standard gameplay and there are countless, optional branches for a more enriched experience that can be tackled at any point in your adventure.

Please click on the relevant category starting with "Before Joining" and read the expanding list in order. Each bullet point must be followed as directed. They will be marked as either "Mandatory" or "Optional," indicate whether its content is most relevant to "All," "Horses," or "Humans," and suggest how thoroughly you should review the thread: "Read" labels a thread that should be studied in comprehensive detail, "Scan" requests you browse through it comfortably and without burden to memorize, and "Acknowledge" merely asks you recognize the feature exists. Beneath each link is an obligatory description of what the thread or board will cover; these should always be read, as they will help you decide if you are interested in perusing further and keep you aware of all our features, even if you do not choose to read or use them. Though we allow our members to avoid either species entirely if they prefer, we encourage new arrivals to read about both species to truly understand the site as a whole unless they are positive they will never cross groups.

"Here's the thing. You're going to get overwhelmed. If you try to read and understand everything, you might as well spelunk to the bottom of Mariana Trench. If you allow yourself to get frustrated when things don't make sense right in the beginning, you'll miss out on the opportunity this site is. It is not like a normal roleplay where you read everything right away before doing anything. Think of this as a video game and this newbie guide as the tutorial. It should walk you through the processes at your own comprehensive pace, and things don't quite make sense until suddenly... you realize they do. Give this site a chance and it will prove itself worth it. You can complain in the cbox. You can ask questions. You can take breaks. You can procrastinate. But don't jump ahead, don't overload, and don't give up. You aren't expected to memorize all of this information this round--or ever, really. Even the creators of the rules have to reference them. You are reading these threads to understand what systems are in place, what possibilities Alcryst provides you with, so that you may use them when you wish. When it does come time to use a system, then refresh on the rules and processes of it. You only need remember the gist, the vague synopsis, that the system exists at all, and sometimes even that will be forgotten. Like a large video game, the site is huge to allow constant creativity and interaction. It may be months before you decide you want to use a particular system--you may never use it at all, instead focusing on specific systems you enjoy, or just the content of roleplaying. The worst thing you can do when approaching Alcryst is treat it like another RPG forum. Instead, shed any preconceived notions, any experienced habits or ritualistic norms, and see everything with fresh eyes, for you are indeed seeing something for the first time."

The Inception passwords are based on which threads are mandatory. Newbie guide establishes that. If the current mandatory/optional labels in compendium change (along with faq, alcryst world, and central laws) then need to go alter the passwords, including if I make any other non-atheneum/compendium threads mandatory
